Abyss Eye: What Do We Know So Far About the Latest Japanese Pokémon Card Set?
Into the shadows and under a full waxing moon comes the latest Japanese Mega Evolution set, Abyss Eye.
Headlined by Mega Darkrai ex, making its Pokémon TCG debut, the set promises a mix of the mythical and midnight murk, bringing together cards that crossover from Kalos and Pokémon Legends: ZA.

The release date and information…
Abyss Eye releases in Japan on 22 May 22, with its English counterpart – Pitch Black – following on 17 July.
Brilliantly, the Pokémon Company deliberately delayed its official trailer by four hours so that the announcement would coincide precisely with the timing of the real-world new moon in Japan.
Because, of course, Darkrai is said to be at its most active during a new moon. That kind of attention to lore-driven detail is exactly the sort of flourish that makes the Pokémon TCG feel special.
The theme…
Abyss Eye is centred on darkness, nightmares, and control-based gameplay, with Mega Darkrai ex at its core.
Mechanically, the set leans hard into Special Conditions and Darkness-type synergy. Shadow Energy is a new card introduced in the set, shielding Benched Darkness Pokémon from all damage – a tool that could make Darkness decks genuinely disruptive in the current format.
Mega Darkrai ex’s signature Abyss Eye attack can knock out any Active Pokémon affected by a Special Condition outright, which, paired with cards that inflict Confusion or Sleep, could make for some deeply unpleasant matchups.
Beyond the headliner, Mega Excadrill ex and Rampardos ex anchor a fossil sub-theme,giving the set a secondary identity beyond pure Darkness domination.
The cards so far…
Abyss Eye is the first set to introduce the newer Mega Evolutions from December’s Mega Dimension DLC, with Mega Darkrai leading the charge as its marquee card.
Though we don’t have the Special Art Rare or the Mega Hyper Rare just yet for Mega Darkrai ex, we have seen a swathe of ghostly Pokémon and most notably the Mega Chandalure ex Special Art Rare from REND – the artist behind Psyduck from Mega Dream, Wigglytuff from Inferno X, and more.
The new Shadow Energy card is also a standout, providing one Darkness Energy while preventing all damage done by your opponent’s attacks to whichever Benched Darkness Pokémon it’s attached to. In the right build, that’s a formidable defensive wall.
With full card reveals still rolling in ahead of the May 22 release, there’s plenty more to look forward to. Watch this space.
The set size…
There will be 81 cards in Abyss Eye’s main set. Based on this size, there should be 35 to 40 secret rares, putting the rough total at around 120 cards, keeping it in line with predecessors Nihil (Munikis) Zero and Ninja Spinner.
That 81-card base makes Abyss Eye the smallest of the current Mega Evolution cycle. Perfect Order, Phantasmal Flames, and Chaos Rising came in at 88, 94, and 86 cards respectively. The pattern is hard to ignore at this point, and it has some fans wondering whether sub-100 base sets are simply the new normal for standard expansions.
The last set to break triple figures was Mega Evolution itself, which launched the block with a comparatively sprawling 132 cards.
Whether that’s a deliberate design choice or a consequence of the Mega Evolution block’s structure remains to be seen — but collectors chasing completion should find Abyss Eye a relatively manageable hunt.
